Indigenous to Europe and Mediterranean, cultivated in India, China and Egypt. The main constituents are volatile oil up to 6% including pinene, phellandrene, limonene, fenchone and anethole. The Flavonoids include rutin, quercitin and kaempferol. Fennel is used by herbalists with gastrointestinal disorders – reflux, hyperacidity, ulcers, flatulence, dry mouth and IBS. Fennel in combination with other herbs may help cystitis.
Contraindicated in constipation, iron deficiency anaemia due to high tannins.
Fennel may increase bleeding due to its anticoagulant activity.
Suspend before surgery and caution needed when taking blood thinners.
