Celiac Disease

Looking further into this protein, gluten which makes up around 15% of our daily protein ingestion, yet is actually unable to be completely digested by human enzymes. The portion left behind are fragments of gliadin. These peptides have a damaging effect in the gut, the immune system, or directly cytotoxic effects on human cells. An important point to note is that, this damage also happens on healthy individuals!!! This may explain why so many of my patients that are not celiac – having been tested, suffer from bloating, pain, loose bowel movements, etc. What causes some non-celiac individuals to experience marked symptoms upon gluten ingestion and others to remain unaffected is as yet unconfirmed.

Looking at how robust ones immune system is in controlling the inflammatory effects is the main area being explored. The problem with relying on the immune system in an aging body, is sooner or later the gluten will effect your gut. Now knowing the harmful effects gluten has on the human gut, should you eat gluten products? If you remove gluten from your eating, be careful you don't replace it with other products of a lower nutritional content. At Maryborough Health Clinic we offer Wellness Programs covering eating, hydration, exercise and customised supplementation for each patient.
